Favorite Five: In Two Minds
By: Miles Silverstein
This month, editor Miles Silverstein sat down with the members of In Two Minds to talk about five of their favorite records.
Animals – Pink Floyd (David – lead singer and rhythm guitarist)
I like it because I feel it is their tightest and most cohesive concept album musically and narratively. Furthermore, I think it is David Gilmour’s best guitar work, as it is spontaneous and exciting, yet classically calculated and always tuneful. The keys sound magical, the vocal performances and lyrics are great. It’s Pink Floyd at their grooviest.
In Rainbows – Radiohead (Nathan – Lead Guitar)
I love it because of the lovely, beautiful noises it makes that only Radiohead could produce. Thom Yorke’s sweet, sweet falsetto voice really makes the record, and truly sets it apart in the canon of experimental rock.
The Balcony – Catfish and the Bottlemen (Murray – Drums)
I love it because the drummer, Bob Hall, delivers a fantastic performance. He’s one of my favourite drummers ever. Van McCann’s voice is loud but nice, giving the album this very sweet sheen. It’s a favorite for sure.
WORRY. – Jeff Rosenstock (Rob – bass)
I started listening to him at the start of this year and have fallen in love with everything he has done. WORRY. brings the classic heavy guitars and live feel of albums such as Pinkerton by Weezer, ending with an Abbey Road-esque medley. Although instead of the Beatles’ end of “the love you take is equal to the love you make,” Rosenstock finishes on a repeating “Love is Worry,” reminding us that in a divided world, love can be boiled down to worrying about your loved ones and the people around you.
The Soft Bulletin – The Flaming Lips (David and Rob)
The Flaming Lips pivoted from their grungy sound of the 90’s into a psychedelic, nostalgic, and low-fi double album that is unlike anything we’ve ever heard. The Lips trade their heavy guitar sound for orchestral instruments and keys reminiscent of bands such as the Moody Blues. Each song is masterfully crafted, from Steven Drozd’s amazing guitar and drum parts, to Wayne Coyne’s passionate vocal performances, all brought together by Dave Friedmann’s impeccable and influential production. This album is a banger!
